Kamila Harris is the daughter to Donald J. Harris and the late Shyamala Gopalan, sister to Maya Harris, aunt to Meena Harris, wife to Doug Emhoff and “Momala” to Cole Emhoff and Ella Emhoff.

Both parents, Shyamala Gopalan from India and Donald J. Harris from Jamaica were born in 1938. They met each other at the age of 24 in 1962. Both were earning their Ph.Ds. at the University of California, Berkeley. They wed in 1963, and Kamala was born in 1964, and her sister Maya in 1967. Both of her parents marched together for justice in the civil rights moment of the 1960’s. By 1969, her parents had separated when Kamala was only 5 years old. After the separation, the mom kept the family together.
Her dad, Donald, worked as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, and is a professor of economics, per his school bio.
Her mom, Shyamala, died in 2009 at the age of 70, Before she passed, she was a Breast Cancer researcher.
Kamala’s husband, Doug Emhoff, was born in Brooklyn in 1964. He was raised in Matawan, New Jersey, but lived in Los Angeles with his family as a teen. He received a bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University in 1987 and then graduated again with a J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1967.
It was interesting how Doug and Kamila met. A mutual friend set them up on a blind date. Their first communication was in a voice mail while Kamala was at a Lakers – Warriors Basketball game, and eventually led to a relationship.
They got married in Santa Barbara, California and three years later, Kamala was elected in the Senate in 2017.
Doug Emhoff is the Jewish spouse of the American Vice-President Kamila Harris, and the nation’s first ever second gentleman. His status will move up to the nation’s first ever first gentleman if Kamala is elected President of the United States.
Before meeting Kamala, Doug was married to Kerstin Emhoff, and from that marriage, he had two children, Cole and Ella.
Cole was born in 1994 and met Kamala for the first time he was a senior in high school, nearing age 18. In 2017, Cole graduated from Colorado College. He is married to Greenley Littlejohn in 2023 with Harris officiating their wedding.
Doug’s daughter Ella was born in 1999 when Cole was age 5.
Doug’s daughter Ella introduced Harris at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, where Kamala accepted the 49th vice-presidential nomination. In 2021, Ella graduated from New York’s Parson’s School of Design in 2021 with a degree in Fine and Studio Arts. She interned at A.L.C. and worked as a fabricator at The Haas Brothers. Ella founded a company called Soft Hands, where is modeled and appeared in both Paris and New York Fashion Week.
Kamala has a younger sister named Maya Harris, born in 1967. She served as a campaign chairperson during Harris’ 2020 presidential run, but then Kamala dropped out as Biden became the Democratic presumptive nominee for president. But shortly after she dropped out, Maya championed her run for Vice-President alongside Joe Biden. Prior to working for her sister Kamala, she worked for the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her 2016 presidential campaign, which ended in failure when Donald J. Trump became president.
Maya graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and then went into law and acquired her degree from Stanford Law School. She had leadership positions at the Ford Foundation and ACLU of Northern California. Also, she was in a senior fellow role at the Center for American Progress, and authored a book called “The Covenant with Black America.” Presently, Maya is married to Tony West who was a former Associate Attorney General and presently the Chief Legal Officer at Uber. She has one daughter named Meena Harris.
